What it Really Means to “Find” Your Purpose
It’s not really about doing anything.
I’m 21 years old with one year of college left to go and the idea of finding my purpose has been playing in the back of my mind for a couple of years now.
What do I do after college? How will I make enough money to support myself and do something I find meaningful? I want to be in my purpose now, but how can I do it all at the same time? What can I do to find my purpose?
People of all ages, especially mine, grapple with these questions as the pressures of having to find a job after college or just a job that you enjoy sneak up on you. In my experience and in witnessing others, I’ve noticed that the pressure to find your purpose stems from misconceptions about how you actually go about that.
Many people believe that trying different things, doing something that sounds interesting, or focusing on money can bring happiness and therefore fulfill our life’s purpose. They also believe that their purpose in this lifetime is to do something purposeful. While that is a part of it, the true way to find your purpose actually lies within you. Your true purpose is not found in doing but in being.
To further explain, our purpose in this lifetime is not to do anything specific but it is to be who we truly are, which comes from within. When we try to find our purpose by actively doing and participating in certain things without knowing who we truly are we are attached to the idea of purpose rather than actually being in it.
When we work to find our purpose by doing things without doing to work on ourselves first, our purpose will never be found because it’s not something you find it’s something you are. Furthermore, we have to do the work to be able to step into our true selves in order to live a purposeful life.
Therefore, the first and most important step in finding your purpose is by being your most authentic self.
When we are able to tune in and be our most authentic self we are then able to express ourselves by doing things that are meaningful and have a purpose that is aligned with what our true selves desire most.
In other words, when we are being who we are to our fullest capacity we are able to naturally express that by doing purposeful things using our talents, gifts, and abilities. You won’t have to find your purpose but you will naturally step into it because you are so aligned with who you are and will then engage in things that can highlight and fulfill you in the best way.
Not only does this benefit you, but it benefits the people around you and the people that you touch while being in your purpose.
So the next time you question what your purpose is or how to find it, remind yourself that your purpose is to be you. It is to live a life so authentically driven that everything you do becomes aligned with what you love. When you do what you love you are giving the world your gifts and not hiding them.
Your purpose is to share those gifts with the world because that will leave a greater impact on people than doing things that are not aligned with who you are.
To sum up, to find your purpose is to find yourself.
