The Importance of Self-Honesty
We can never know what the truth is unless we tell it to ourselves. To be transparent about what you feel, think, and want to someone else means you have to do that with yourself first.
Self-honesty is one of the hardest tasks to accomplish because it includes admitting your flaws and forgiving/accepting yourself for them. It also includes being honest about how you feel in the present moment rather than pushing them aside to deal with “later on”.
Being honest with yourself is about learning to be vulnerable, let your gaurd down, and put your ego aside. If you are not honest with yourself in the moment you can never speak your truth to others.
Examples of things it is important to be honest with yourself about include admiting you were wrong, that you are struggling with a mental illness, that you are in love, that you are angry, that you feel guilty about doing something wrong, or even who you truly are.
Your honesty with yourself is the foundation for a lot of things in life. For example, it is the foundation for healthy relationships, being your authentic self, understanding and processing your emotions, and living ego-less.
Self honesty is necessary for healthy relationships
Hiding or denying the truth about a situation or your own truth affect the relationship you have with yourself. Furthermore, the type of relationship you have with yourself will affect the type of relationship you have with others.
If you don’t trust yourself to do things, lie to yourself about who are or something you feel you are more likely to do the same with others and have a lot of trust issues.
This is becasue we can’t admit to others what we can’t admit to ourselves.
Self honesty is necessary for authenticity
In order to live as your most authentic self you must be honest with yourself. There is no way to be 100% you if you present yourself as someone you are not in order to fit in or to please others. Both of these are most always signs that you are being dishonest with yourself.
Being authentic also means living in your truth no matter if others agree with it or not. It also means being unapologetic and loving who you are without deceiving or forcing yourself.
Self honesty is necessary for understanding/processing emotions
When you are honest about how you are feeling instead of ignoring them, it is easier to understand where your emotions are coming from. When you can understand where your emotions are coming from you are then able to process them in a healthy way. It will also help you be more aware of what your emotions are telling you about yourself and your surrounding.
Self honesty is necessary for living ego-less
If you have an ego problem being honest with yourself will be much harder. You see, your ego protects you from having to feel anything negative such as guilt and shame. When you are dishonest with yourself your ego wins and you will never be able to own up to things.
This is why people who have big egos are frustrating to be around. You may be able to see exactly what the truth is but they are completley ignorant to it.
This occurs either because they really have no idea that they not being dishonest with themselves or they do notice the truth but chose to ignore it because if they own up to it their ego will be bruised.
Now you can better understand the affect that being honest with yourself can have in multiple aspects of your life.
From now on if you find yourself trying to distract, ignore, push away, or lie about how you feel, how you are behaving, or anything else try to stop and take a second to really think about why you are doing that. . .
What are you trying to hide from youself? Why don’t you want to be truthful about it? What are you afraid of feeling or knowing?
Then work on taking steps to uncovering your truth so you can have healthier relationships, live authentically, understand your emotions, and not have an ego.
