It’s The Little Things That Give You Life

To live is to appreciate the tiny crumbles of sand & the ocean at the same time.

It’s the way your skin rubs against the soft blanket.

It’s the feeling of the sun beating down on your face.

It’s the way your partner smiles at you.

It’s the birds chirping on your fence.

It’s the warmth of a hot cup of tea or coffee as it slides down your throat.

It’s the freedom to be yourself.

It’s the connection between you and your best friend.

It’s the colors in your personal spaces.

It’s the music that brings you joy.

It’s the fact that you woke up this morning.

It’s the money you have in your wallet, no matter the amount.

It’s the insect that gave you a visit on your daily walk.

It’s the little things that give you life.

There are a million little things that fill up the life we are living.

Some of those are the same for many people such as being able to wake up in the morning, but some of them are more idiosyncratic such as the bright blue stone that sits on my bedside table.

Little things are what give us life. They give us the opportunity to take a step back from the major things in life and find gratitude in the small things.

They help us to realize there is more to life than the promotion we didn’t get, the money we lost, or the relationship that is struggling.

Now that doesn’t mean those things don’t matter, because they do, those events are occurring for a reason. However, it is up to you how you decide to handle those situations. One way is to have some perspective by referencing those little things.

You may not have gotten what we believed was your dream job but that does not define the goodness of your life.

As I said, there are a million little things to help you get through those tough times. How do they help? They help you to practice gratitude and to come back to the things that are good in your life.

If I am going through a difficult time something that always brings me back to joy, even for a moment, is drinking tea. The warm feeling of the tea going down my throat is comforting. The warmth envelopes your body and alerts your senses of the sensation you are experiencing.

This little thing is a way I am able to come back to gratitude and come back to joy even when things outside of me may be difficult.

Finding the small things that lift you up is important for survival.

Not just for surviving but for living life to the fullest. It also humbles you and connects you to the things that seem minor but impact you in major ways.

For a moment, go back to the first section I wrote (the sentences that start with “it’s the”). For the ones that you can relate to, take a moment to imagine the way you feel when you are experiencing that small thing. For example, how do you feel when you feel the sun on your face or when you listen to your favorite music?

Really, deeply take in that feeling and let it embrace you. Let it love you and share its joy with you.

After you have done that and you know what gives you that good feeling, make your own list of small things.

It can be a list of three things or a list of fifty things. The best thing to do is make the list of seemingly little things that make you feel good and then go through each one feeling the way it makes you feel. Essentially, you would be doing the same thing I suggested you do a moment ago but with your own list.

With both exercises, you can take those feeling into the rest of your day and no matter how difficult it is you can always go back to those small things that lit you up with happiness, joy, love, gratitude, or whatever you felt.

Let yourself major in minor things; in the things that make life feel like you are alive. Without those little things, we lose sight of the meaning our lives have and neglect the purpose and feeling of truly being alive.
