From the way, you feel within to the events outside of your control.

How is this possible? I know I’ve talked about how not everything is in our control and many external circumstances, events, and experiences we can’t just change because we want them to.

While that is still true, there’s another way we can change what we can’t control without actually changing it…

The way to do this is quite simple actually. However, many people don’t always see or even know it to be an option because when we brainstorm how to change things, we automatically think of how we can physically change the circumstance.

For example, “How can I get them to stop fighting? How can I change the political scene? How can I change the way he behaves?”

These types of questions focus on how you can use your energy, time, and efforts to change something that is virtually out of your control. Now, of course, there may be a way for you to actually get involved and change these things but for most people, that’s not always possible.

Therefore, I’m going to tell you how you can change virtually anything in your life that you can’t physically change and that you have no control over.

How to “change” anything in your life

So, what’s the secret?

The way you can change anything in your life is by changing your perspective on it.

Okay, so this doesn’t actually change what’s going on in your life. However, it does change your perspective on it and what you focus on which can bring you to a place where you don’t feel so much discomfort and misery about wishing you can change something.

The way to change your perspective on something is by changing what you focus on and by asking questions that can help you shift that.

For example, say you are going through a bad breakup and you desperately wish you could change the other person's mind.

You may ask yourself “why is this happening to me? What did I do to deserve this? Why won’t they give me what I need?”

When you ask yourself any question we will automatically search for any answer we can get, any validation for what we are feeling. Therefore, questions like the ones above put your focus on what you are missing, what you are losing, and what you wish you could physically change to feel better.

When this is where we put our focus everything will be viewed as only bad.

However, if you ask yourself questions like, “what can I learn from this situation? What am I grateful for? What’s great about this? How can I use this situation?” you are more likely to focus on what you can gain and learn.

Furthermore, your drive to find new and more desirable answers to these questions will lead you to change your focus on the situation and even the way you might feel about it.

It changes the way you feel about it by bringing in more positive feelings that you can associate with the situation. Even if nothing has actually changed, you are now capable of changing your focus and state around it just by asking different questions.

You can use the second set of questions in any situation that is challenging and you want to change.

Again, they won’t actually change what is happening but it will change your perspective and where you put your focus.

Lastly, when the perspective changes you will also be able to detach from the outcome and the details that cause you to stay in a “why me” state of mind.

So, what situation do you wish you can change?

Take this time to now “change” it. Ask yourself these questions and always keep them in the back of your head.

  1. What can I learn from this situation?
  2. What am I grateful for?
  3. What’s great about this?
  4. How can I use this situation?
