Have You Checked in With Yourself Lately?
Yes or no, here are some questions you can ask yourself right now.
If we checked in on ourselves as much as we checked social media we would be so in tune with ourselves that we would be able to understand every part of ourselves and then be able to communicate that to others more clearly.
The thing is, so many of us get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that being able to take just 5 minutes of the day to check-in can seem like a big task.
Most of the time we just forget and neglect the simple self-check-ins that can be done anywhere at any time.
This can lead to confusion around who you are, what you want, how you feel, what you need, and how you are doing. It is easy to trick yourself into believing the answers to all those questions are positive, especially when you keep your mask on with yourself.
Starting off with a super simple check-in is a great way to start learning about yourself and being honest about who you are, what you want, how you feel, what you need, and how you are doing.
Check-ins can be done any time you want! In the morning, before bed, at the beginning of the week, at the end of the week, after work is done, or in the middle of a busy day.
It helps to integrate a self-check-in into your routine so that you remember to do it and it becomes a natural part of your existence.
To get you started, here are some great examples of different sets of questions you can ask yourself during your check-ins and the best times to ask yourself those questions!
Question set #1 — Emotional check-in
This set is best used at the end of the week, when you are working through emotions, or you are going through a tough time.
- How do I feel?
- What do I need?
- Who or what do I forgive?
- What do I celebrate in my life?
- What do I need to release?
- What do I trust?
Question set #2 — Priority check-in
This set is great to check-in with yourself at the start of a week, the beginning of a project, or when evaluating your life.
- What is my #1 priority right now (or for the week)?
- What do I want to do less of?
- What do I want to do more of?
- How do I want to feel?
- How can I feel the way I want to feel?
- If I get stuck, what can I remember to keep me going?
Question set #3 — Uplifting check-in
This set is great to do every morning when you wake up or every night before you go to bed!
- What are 3 things I am grateful for?
- What are 3 things that bring me joy?
- What am I most proud of?
- What do I need to let go of?
- How can I focus more on the positive?
- What are 3 things I love to do and how can I do that more?
Question set #4 — Perspective check-in
Ask yourself these questions when you are struggling to overcome a difficult time in your life, feel hopeless, or need a quick change in perspective.
- What is the lesson in this?
- What are 3 positive things to come out of this?
- What is something positive that happened today?
- How can I help myself overcome this?
- What expectations can I let go of?
- Am I being patient? If not, how can I be?
Question set #5 — Mental health check-in
Ask yourself these questions anytime, any day if you are struggling with your mental health and need to evaluate how you are doing mentally.
- How am I feeling mentally?
- How can I nurture my mental health today?
- Do I need to rest?
- How does my body feel physically?
- What emotions am I expereiencing?
- Do I need to reach out to someone?
When you ask yourself any of these questions you can do it in your head or even better write it down on paper, journal it, keep it as a reference so you can see your progress.
Again, you can ask yourself the above questions at any time that feels right to you! You can also mix and match the questions based on what feels right to you at this moment.
There are no rules and no pressure, your check-in is a special time with yourself meaning you can do it however you want. The goal is to eventually be comfortable enough to get completely vulnerable with yourself for a 100% honest check-in.
All you need is 5–10 minutes to tune in, get introspective, and get to know yourself a little better.
