Are You Who You Want to be or Who You Think You Should be?
What are you limiting yourself on?
Are you holding yourself back from what you ultimately want in life?
We so often blame external things for the person we are and what we think we can or can not have.
The idea I want to challenge you on today is that you are the one who actually decides who you are and not the things around you.
Yes, external things play a big factor in what we are exposed to and what we experience. We have no control over how people around us behave and react to things and often times that can influence how we think about ourselves.
But everything that we believe about ourselves that has come from external things became a belief because you decided it aligned with you enough to fully take on that identity without challenging its validity.
In this way, we do not always become the person we want to be but we become the person we think we should be.
When we align ourselves with who we think we should be we will always be searching for more meaning and purpose in our life.
Here’s how to determine if your identity is based on who you want to be or who you should be:
- Ask yourself: “How would I describe myself?”
- Think about each way you described yourself and think about when that part of your identity was first adopted. In other words, did it come from something you experienced, something someone said about you, something you wanted to become, something you worked to be?
- Now think about each of those and ask yourself, “Is that something I really want to be a part of my identity?”
- If yes, great! Keep working towards improving that! If not, then think about what you would want to replace that with.
- Brainstorm ways to take on that new identity and begin acting as if it is already a part of you!
