Are You Prioritizing Comfort Over Progress?

In other words, are you afraid of uncertainty and hate discomfort?

First, let me start off by saying that it’s important to find comfort in your life and to feel like you can let go and relax. That kind of comfort should always be prioritized.

However, the type of comfort I will be talking about is complacent comfort.

I describe complacent comfort as when an individual is satisfied with where they are, is comfortable with what they are doing, and does not seek to make further progress in their life or a specific area of their life.

Complacent comfort is not a result of just wanting to relax and feel secure. It’s more so a result of not wanting to risk losing comfort from indulging in things that have uncertain results.

In other words, some people get complacent in their lives when they are prioritizing the security and safety they associate with being comfortable and then work to avoid any possible threat to that comfort.

Why is this common?

Because risk is often uncertain and uncomfortable. If you are someone who values comfort and security very highly any sort of risk will be avoided.

Despite the obvious comfort for these people, there is an added comfort in being able to have high certainty in what their life will be like. Therefore, many people have the belief that it’s less painful to stay in their complacent comfort than to make any progress in life because progress can be a risk that has effects worse than your current circumstances.

The problem with this is when progress and growth are not prioritized our lives become mundane and we begin to settle for whatever seems to match our current comfort so as not to disturb the “peace” of the current certainty.

Furthermore, we lose any possibility of a greater life. Most likely, if you are prioritizing this type of comfort over progress and growth you don’t have a great life. You have a simple and most risk-averse life that doesn’t have much drive or purpose in it.

More simply, you just aren’t progressing.

Progress and growth are two of the most important parts of life. If we don’t have them we aren’t living the natural human existence.

And the truth is, no matter how hard you may try to avoid the uncertainty and discomfort of progress it will happen!!

There really is no avoiding it because it is a natural part of human existence. To avoid it is to deny yourself as a human being.

So, does any of what I said look like your life? It doesn’t have to be as intense as most of what I’ve talked about. If you fear uncertainty and being uncomfortable AT ALL and as a result have not made progress, you may be prioritizing comfort over progress.

Now, this is not an uncommon phenomenon. Many people experience this in their lives but few go to the extreme of never making progress.

If you have related to or felt like anything I said resonated with you ask yourself these questions:

  1. Where in your life do you feel comfortable?
  2. Is that comfort increasing or decreasing the quality of your life? How?
  3. Have you had any personal progress recently? Emotionally, spiritually, financially, mentally, in relationships, in work?
  4. Have you grown within the last year?
  5. Where were you a year ago compared to where you are today?
  6. How can you bring safety to the idea of progress?
